What is influencer marketing?

Definition

Influencer marketing is the practice of partnering with creators who have built an audience so a brand can borrow their reach, trust, and voice.

Celebrity endorsement is as old as advertising; what social platforms changed is the supply. Anyone who builds an audience can rent it out, and the market has stratified into tiers: nano (under ten thousand followers), micro, macro, and mega creators, each with different economics. Engagement rates generally fall as follower counts rise, which is why small creators often deliver better response per dollar while big ones deliver reach.

Programs are measured through engagement and view metrics, tracked links and promo codes for direct response, earned media value for reporting, and increasingly through paid amplification: the brand licenses a creator’s post and runs it as an ad from the creator’s own handle, keeping the native feel while adding targeting and scale. Attribution stays messy regardless, since much of the effect surfaces later as branded search rather than as clicks on the post.

The failure point is vetting. Follower counts are the easiest number to fake, engagement pods and bought audiences inflate the visible metrics, and a creator’s past content can contain things a brand cannot stand next to. Programs that select on reach alone routinely pay for audiences that do not exist or do not fit.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo’s audience conversation data offers a grounding check that marketplace self-reporting cannot: which creators a target audience actually discusses, shares, and quotes. Teams use it to surface candidates from observed behavior and to sanity-check a creator’s real resonance before signing, alongside the usual audience-quality diligence.
