What are audience insights?

Definition

Audience insights are findings about who an audience is, what it cares about, and how it behaves, drawn from sources such as panel surveys, platform analytics, and the conversations the audience actually has.

Audience insight sits underneath targeting, positioning, and creative: before any of those decisions, someone has to answer who these people are and what moves them. The sources fall into two families. Declared data, panel studies and surveys, is representative and structured but self-reported, and people are unreliable narrators of their own behavior. Observed data, platform analytics and public conversation, is real behavior but unrepresentative, skewed toward whoever posts most.

The craft is triangulation. A persona built only from declared data reads like a census entry, technically accurate and useless in a brief. One built only from social conversation mistakes the loudest one percent for the market. Strategists cross-reference: use the panel to size and structure the audience, use the conversation to hear its actual language, obsessions, and objections, and treat disagreement between the two as the most interesting finding in the room.

Insight expires quietly. Audience documents get built once, from a study that was current at the time, then steer briefs for years while the audience itself moves on. If the insights deck predates the current platform cycle, the safest assumption is that the audience has changed and the deck has not.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo carries both source families side by side: GWI audience panels for the declared layer, live conversation data for the observed one. /audiences/{id}/conversations returns what a defined audience is actually talking about, the audience_insights MCP tool gives an agent the same view, and daily refresh keeps the picture current instead of fossilized.
