What is share of voice?

Definition

Share of voice (SOV) is the percentage of the total conversation, content, or media presence in a category that belongs to one brand.

The idea started in paid media, where share of voice meant a brand’s slice of category ad spend or impressions. As earned and organic channels took over, the definition widened: today share of voice usually means a brand’s share of category mentions and engagement across social platforms, news, and forums, sometimes weighted by reach.

The math is simple: divide one brand’s mentions, impressions, or engagement by the category total across the brands you track. Everything hard lives in the inputs. Which platforms count, whether a viral TikTok weighs the same as a post with ten views, and how you treat mentions that never name the brand all change the number. That is why share of voice is most useful as a trend you measure consistently over time, not as a single figure quoted in isolation.

Practitioners watch it because it tends to lead other metrics: sustained gains in a brand’s share of category conversation usually show up before gains in awareness and market share, and a sudden drop is often the first visible sign of a competitor’s campaign landing.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo computes share of voice from tracked category data: a category snapshot returns each brand’s share of the conversation alongside top angles and trending topics, over the API or inside Claude via the MCP server. Because the underlying posts are retained, you can move from the percentage down to the verbatims behind it in one step, and the daily refresh cycle makes the trendline consistent enough to act on.
