What is earned media?

Definition

Earned media is the coverage and conversation a brand receives without paying for it or publishing it, including press coverage, reviews, social mentions, and word of mouth.

In the PESO model that PR planners use (paid, earned, shared, owned), earned is the oldest lever: it descends from press clippings and publicity work that predates advertising as we know it. What makes it distinct is that a third party chose to talk. That independence is why earned coverage carries credibility paid placement cannot buy, and why it is the layer most exposed in a crisis, since the same independence means you cannot approve the framing.

Measurement typically covers mention volume, the reach and authority of outlets, share of voice against competitors, and message pull-through, whether the coverage actually carried the brand’s intended story. The contested metric is earned media value, which converts coverage into ad-spend equivalents using multipliers; the multipliers have been widely criticized as unfounded, and many measurement bodies recommend against them. Counting and actually reading the coverage beats pricing it.

The nuance practitioners hit is the blurring boundary. Creator posts sit between earned and paid depending on whether money changed hands, and platforms increasingly let brands amplify earned mentions with spend. Clean category lines matter less than being honest in reporting about what was independent and what was assisted.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo tracks the earned layer alongside paid and owned for the same brand, live social mentions and open web coverage next to the ads running and the landing pages changing, so a coverage spike can be read in context. Everything is stored permanently even if deleted at source, verbatims are one call away, and every output links to the coverage itself.
