What is brand health?

Definition

Brand health is the overall strength of a brand, read through a composite of measures such as awareness, consideration, sentiment, and loyalty tracked over time.

The term comes from survey research, where trackers measure the classic funnel, awareness, familiarity, consideration, preference, usage, advocacy, alongside perception attributes like trust and relevance. The first thing to know is that there is no standard definition: every vendor and every research team assembles a slightly different basket of metrics and calls the result brand health, which makes cross-company comparisons mostly meaningless.

Used well, brand health is a baseline plus a trendline. A team picks its metrics, freezes the definitions, and reads movement wave over wave, increasingly with always-on signals like sentiment, conversation share, and search interest filling the gaps between survey waves. Its organizational job is often to give brand investment a scoreboard that finance will accept, which is why the metric choices deserve as much scrutiny as the results.

The known failure mode is metric sprawl: dashboards with forty KPIs where something is always up, something is always down, and nothing means anything. The discipline is to track the few metrics that connect to real decisions and hold their definitions still. Single-number health scores have the opposite problem: a stable composite can mask awareness rising while preference collapses, so any index needs to open up into its components on demand.

How this shows up in Waldo

Waldo feeds the always-on side of brand health: daily-refreshed conversation, ad activity, and audience signals for tracked brands, kept permanently, so the history is intact when someone asks how this quarter compares. When a metric moves and someone asks why, the raw verbatims and posts behind it are one call away, with every output linked to its sources.
