AEO vs SEO: what actually changes, and what does not
Updated
Definition
AEO and SEO pursue different outcomes from the same underlying work: SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of results, while AEO (answer engine optimization) structures content so an AI assistant selects it as the source of a direct answer.
The clearest way to separate the two is by what winning looks like. An SEO win is a position: your page sits third for a query and earns a predictable share of clicks. An AEO win is a citation: ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI Overview reproduces your fact, names your brand, or links your page as its source. One page can win both, and the best pages do, but the mechanics reward different things.
SEO rewards the page; AEO rewards the passage. Ranking is scored at the document level, which is why thin pages with strong domains still rank. Answer engines retrieve passages: a self-contained two-to-four sentence block that states a fact with a number and a date can be lifted into an answer even when the page around it would never rank top three. This inverts old habits: burying the answer under a narrative introduction costs nothing in SEO and everything in AEO.
Measurement is where the honest differences show. SEO measurement is mature: positions, impressions, and clicks from Search Console. AEO measurement is young and noisy: answers vary by session, model, and phrasing, so a single check proves nothing and only repeated, averaged runs across a fixed prompt set produce a trendline. Being named in an answer and being cited as a source also diverge completely, and both need tracking, because a brand can be the machinery behind an answer without ever being mentioned in it.
The work that serves both at once: a front-loaded direct answer, question-shaped headings, structured data, visible dates, and passages that carry real figures. The work that serves only one: link building and domain authority still move rankings far more than citations, while presence on the third-party pages engines retrieve from (forums, review sites, comparison lists) moves citations far more than rankings.
How this shows up in Waldo
Waldo sits on the data side of this split. Its brand, category, and audience intelligence ships as structured, source-linked output over 200+ API and MCP endpoints, refreshed every 24 hours, which is exactly the kind of dated, verifiable material both disciplines reward publishing.
Questions teams ask
Does SEO still matter if answer engines take over?
Yes, because answer engines retrieve from the same index search built. Pages that rank get retrieved more often, and AI referral traffic today arrives alongside organic search traffic rather than replacing it. Treat AEO as a second scoreboard on the same work, not a replacement discipline.
Can the same page be optimized for both?
Usually. A page with a direct answer up top, question-shaped sections, real figures with dates, and clean structure serves both scoreboards. The genuine conflicts are rare and small: narrative long-forms that rank on authority but resist quotation are the main casualty.
How is AEO measured?
With repetition and patience. A fixed set of category prompts, run on a schedule across engines, with named and cited scored separately and averaged over multiple runs per prompt. Single spot checks mislead because the same prompt produces different answers across sessions.
