GWI asks consumers directly. Waldo licenses those answers and sets them next to what the market is saying and running.

The short answer

GWI is the survey-based consumer research platform behind much of modern audience planning, and a Waldo data partner: Waldo licenses GWI audience panels as part of its own data layer. Go to GWI directly for custom survey work and deep panel analysis; use Waldo when you want GWI panels alongside live conversation, ads, and trends over API and MCP.

GWI, formerly GlobalWebIndex, is the survey-based consumer research platform much of modern audience planning stands on. Its flagship GWI Core study has run quarterly since 2013, fielding a harmonized questionnaire to consumer panels across 50+ markets, which is why planners and insight teams treat it as a shared currency for who an audience is, what it believes, and how it spends its media time.

Waldo is a GWI data partner, not a rival. GWI audience panels are licensed into Waldo’s own data layer, and Waldo surfaces GWI data in its products, including Pitch. So this page is a scoping guide rather than a feature fight: when you need GWI directly, and when Waldo’s layer already covers you, with GWI panels alongside live conversation, ads, and trends over API and MCP.

When each one wins

Choose Waldo when

  • You want GWI panels and live market data in one call: what people report, next to what they post and what brands run.
  • Agents consume the research, so API and MCP delivery matters more than a research console.
  • The question spans brand, category, and audience, and the answer needs sources attached.
  • Credit metering fits how your usage actually flows, without a seat for everyone who asks.

Choose GWI when

  • You need custom survey work: your own questions, fielded to a defined panel.
  • Deep panel analysis at full survey depth, with every crossbreak and profiling point, is the job.
  • Media planning needs harmonized audience data across 50+ markets from a single methodology.
  • Long-running brand tracking benefits from a consistent survey instrument applied over years.

Where Waldo is different

Attitudes next to behavior

GWI panels tell you what an audience says about itself. The layer around them adds what that audience posts in public, in source-linked verbatims from /audiences/{id}/conversations, so stated and observed sit side by side.

The creative record alongside

Meta and Google ad libraries tracked daily per brand, landing page snapshots, and category trends live in the same surface, so a panel finding sits next to what brands are running at that audience.

One install for agents

The MCP server is one block in mcp.json or an org-wide connector, and works in Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot. Tools like audience_insights put panel-informed answers where the work already happens.

Metered access

Credits per call from an org-level pool, about 1 per 20 results on raw lists and about 5 on analysis calls, with no per-seat fees. The whole team can ask audience questions from one shared credit pool.

Questions teams ask

Is Waldo a GWI alternative?

No, and this page is not arguing it is. GWI is a Waldo data partner: Waldo licenses GWI audience panels into its data layer. The real question is scope: direct GWI access for custom survey work and full-depth panel analysis, Waldo when panels should arrive alongside live market data over API and MCP.

When should I go to GWI directly?

When the survey itself is the work: custom questions fielded to a defined panel, full crossbreak analysis inside the research platform, or harmonized planning data your media team reads at survey depth. Waldo does not replace that, and does not try to.

How does GWI data show up in Waldo?

As part of the audience layer. GWI panel data informs Waldo’s audience endpoints and appears in Waldo products, including Pitch, alongside live conversation, ads, and trends, with every output linked to its sources.
